A Guide to Guided Reading

Jul 26, 2016 | by Janice Smith

Perhaps the most frequently asked for videos revolve around Guided Reading.  So it comes as no surprise we’ve talked about this one more than once.

And in the past week we’ve added over 75 brand new videos from KIPP Austin, a bunch of which are featuring Guided Reading.  So we wanted to take a second to give you a quick tutorial on how to find exactly what you’re looking for when it comes to Guided Reading.

In the Framework for 100% (the Framework we use to tag and organize all Mission 100% video clips), you’ll find ‘Guided Reading’ under our Instruction bucket.

Once you click on it, you will see videos that are tagged with ‘Guided Instruction’.  At the top you can filter by grade (Elementary, Middle or High School), and on the right you will see all the hashtags we use to help you to find exactly what you want.

For Guided Reading we break videos down into the following hashtags:

  • Preparation
  • Focus
  • Preview
  • Predict
  • Fluency
  • First Read
  • Second Read
  • Comprehension
  • Summarize/Close

So for this week’s Video of the Week we’re featuring Nadia Abdalah, a first grade teacher at KIPP Austin Leadership Academy.  This clip comes from the opening of her Guided Reading lesson, but don’t worry- the rest of the lesson is up and live in the Mission 100% library!
